Shooting Pain In Heel

I run. I walk. I hop. I skip. It doesn’t matter what I do, the dull, aching pain shoots up from my heel and is relentless in its throbbing. This is a realty to many. It doesn’t have to be that way. It doesn’t have to be painful.

Possible causes to shooting pain in heel

Many factors can cause shooting pain in the heel. Some of these include plantar fasciitis, arthritis, ruptured tendons, and spurs. Other factors are wearing improperly fitted shoes or walking on uneven surfaces. What is pain in the heel?

The pain in your heel can be intense and shooting, but it does not necessarily mean you have a serious injury. It may be caused by muscle tightness or repetitive strain. The pain can also be caused by an injury such as stepping down on a sharp object. In that case, there would likely also be a swelling and/or bruising. The most common cause of heel pain is a heel spur.

Heel Spurs

  • Heel spurs are bony projections that form on the heel bone (also called calcaneus).
  • Heel spurs are typically caused by injury (e.g. stepping on a sharp object) or repetitive stress (e.g. walking on hard surfaces).
  • Heel spurs are not a medical condition, but are often associated with medical conditions such as arthritis and poor circulation.
  • Heel spurs are not painful. Heel spurs are often small and hard to detect.
  • Heel spurs can be seen with the naked eye.
  • Heel spurs are not visible using x-rays.
  • Heel spurs are not caused by a medical condition. Heel spurs can be treated by wearing custom made orthotics or by using heel lifts.

Symptoms: Painful to walk, sitting positions, standing positions

Some of these symptoms include, pain when walking or running, pain when sitting or standing for long periods of time, discomfort in the heel. These symptoms can range in severity depending on the person. Some people may also have symptoms that are not as severe. Degenerative changes in the tendons of the foot, caused by the repetitive use of the foot, can lead to plantar fasciitis.

Diagnosing Plantar Fasciitis

Diagnosing plantar fasciitis is often done by a doctor because it is not always easy to diagnose. Diagnosis of plantar fasciitis is typically done by an orthopedic doctor. This involves a physical exam of the foot and lower leg, along with an x-ray. Only one or two physical exams are needed to diagnose plantar fasciitis.
